Solution Focused Therapy
Solution-Focused Therapy
Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT)is a treatment that invites you to work closely with me to identify ways of solving your issues. This approach focusses on empowerment through problem-solving, as opposed to traditional therapy that focusses on the why or how of problems.
To guide you forward, I will assist you to identify an area where there is an exception to the issue e.g., where things worked well regardless of your issue.
Like positive psychology, Solution-Focused Therapy focusses on goal-orientated questioning that leads to a future-orientated direction.
Positive psychology recognises the need for acknowledging that negative qualities can be tied to positive outcomes and vice-versa, so it is not always easy to just label one thing as good or bad, because it depends on the context.
Given that happiness and wellbeing are complex experiences that integrate light and dark elements, acknowledging, accepting, and embracing this understanding can often give us a more nuanced view of human nature.
Trying to manage our states on our own can be super challenging. Knowing that you are on the right path can make a world of difference.
Solution-Focused Therapy has been successfully applied to the following areas:
- depression
- relationship difficulties
- drug and alcohol abuse
- eating disorders
- anger management
- crisis intervention
- incarceration, recidivism reduction
The suitability of SFT will be determined either at our initial session or over the course of therapy. This is always in conjunction with you, of course, as, no doubt, you have ideas of what could improve your life and even if you don’t, we can work on that together.
Research has revealed that most of the ‘growing’ happens in the time between visits, therefore, it is normal practice for you to be given tasks to do at home that might include keeping a record of certain thoughts and feelings and/or completing activity sheets.
